Dallas County

Dallas County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas within the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area (colloquially referred to as the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex). As of the 2007 U.S. Census, the county had a population of 2,366,511 and is now the ninth most populous county in the United States.

Its county seat is Dallas, which is also the largest city in the county, the third-largest city in Texas, and the ninth-largest city in the United States. Dallas County is the most populous county within the metropolitan area and contains the largest of its principal cities. The county was named in honor of George Mifflin Dallas, the eleventh vice president of the United States.

Collin County

Collin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. The county has been experiencing explosive growth in recent years. In 2000, its population was 491,675; in 2007 the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that its population had reached 730,690. Its seat is McKinney. The county and its seat are both named in honor of Collin McKinney, one of the five men who drafted the Texas Declaration of Independence and the oldest of the 59 men who signed it.

Collin County is part of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. A small portion of the city of Dallas is located in the county. Other important cities in the county include Allen, Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Richardson, and Wylie.

Collin County is the richest county in Texas and the 23rd wealthiest county in the country.

Denton County

Denton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. In 2000, its population was 432,976; in 2007 the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that its population had reached 612,357. Part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, it is one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States. The county seat is Denton. The county and the city are both named for John B. Denton, who was a preacher, lawyer, and soldier.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 958 square miles (2,481 km²), of which, 889 square miles (2,301 km²) of it is land and 69 square miles (180 km²) of it (7.24%) is water.

Denton County sits atop a portion of the Barnett Shale, a geological formation believed to contain large quantities of natural gas. The County has benefited from tax revenue related to gas drilling and production, though complaints have arisen that many of the rural roads in the area (which were never designed to handle the heavy equipment used in gas drilling) have been destroyed by drilling companies.
